Welcome to East Girard

a “main street” that has adopted innovators, new ideas and a “can do” attitude. A neighborhood rich with history and pride, East Girard has transformed into a mecca for new businesses, offering great places to live, work and play. It wants the curious and unique and adventurous to come here and feel – welcome.

A Little History

East Girard has always been synonymous with hard work, community, and the waterfront. It’s where, in the 1830’s, the William Cramp & Sons Ship and Engine Building Company built ships made of wood, iron, and steel (employing more residents than anywhere else in Fishtown). For centuries, residential, commercial, and industrial buildings have comingled here. It’s this unique mix that gives East Girard the character and opportunities it has today.

How Fishtown got its name

In the early 19th century refrigeration was reserved for the rich, so fisherman brought their daily catch to the docks along the Delaware to be pickled, salted, or smoked for preserving. The odor has long since gone, but the name Fishtown stuck.
